Unit Mission Statement
The Museum Shop at James Monroe’s Highland is the point of entry for visitors to the site.
The Museum Shop is responsible for reception of visitors, sale of tickets, way-finding assistance (for on-site and off-site questions), and sale of Museum Shop merchandise.
The Cashier assists the Museum Shop Manager in daily operations of stocking and display of merchandise, and light cleaning of display areas in the Museum Shop.
Position Summary
The Cashier will interact with Highland visitors in ticket sales, way-finding assistance, and sale of Museum Shop Merchandise.
The Cashier also assists the Museum Shop Manager in daily operations of stocking and display of merchandise and light cleaning of display areas in the Museum Shop. Additional support responsibilities may be required.
Conditions of Employment
  • This position is a temporary (hourly) position not to exceed 6 months. All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of retail operations including cash and credit card transactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to reconcile inventory and daily transaction reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and write as well as follow oral and written instructions and the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Excellent communication skills with and a strong customer service orientation. Proven ability to communicate effectively with the public, with the ability to provide tourist information to visitors.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with internal staff.
  • Previous cash handling experience in a service oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge or familiarity in working with a POS system.
  • Previous experience or familiarity of the Albemarle-Charlottesville area.
  • Previous experience working in retail sales and using a cash register.
  • Familiarity with stocking of inventory and merchandise display.
