The Program Director is responsible for providing leadership, oversight and development of the BRR curriculum, new courses and new course delivery methods, and current or future affiliated educational offerings. Collaborates with other programs across all OSU campus sites.
Primary responsibilities include management of the major, teaching BRR courses, meeting regularly with each BRR student and their mentors, overseeing student theses and thesis defenses, reviewing and revising the BRR options, writing and managing external grants to support students, and performing annual program assessments.
The Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the BRR Program on the Corvallis campus including hiring, supervising, and evaluating advisors, instructors, and graduate student assistants; coordination of teaching; oversight to ensure that OSU and College of Agricultural Sciences Policies and Regulations are followed, including but not limited to Human Resources, Academic Regulations, Advising Policies, FERPA, Safety Policies, and Student Conduct and Community Standards; management of program budget.
BRR is an inclusive interdisciplinary biosciences major centered around student research. Students take biosciences core courses, complete an option (agriculture/bioscience/natural resource specialization), and do a research project with a faculty mentor. Faculty mentors are drawn from OSU faculty and state and national agencies. The BRR courses form a sequence supporting the research process, from conceptualization through publication and presentation.
The College of Agricultural Sciences is Oregon’s principal source of agricultural and food systems knowledge and a significant source of knowledge regarding environmental quality, natural resources, life sciences, and rural economies and communities worldwide. The college’s 14 departments (three of which are joint with the College of Science) provide undergraduate and graduate education, leading to 13 baccalaureate and 30 graduate degrees and extended education programs throughout Oregon and beyond. With over 3,000 students, 280 professorial faculty, and exceeding $160 million per year in expenditures, the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) is a complex organization. In addition to the main campus, CAS has faculty-located Branch Experiment Stations in 13 agroecozones across the state and Extension Faculty in each county. CAS is well known for its collaborations among state and federal agencies. Our researchers and Extension faculty work closely with agency partners in EPA, USDA ARS, USGS, US Forest Service, US Navy, USDOE, NIH, NOAA, NMFS, USFWS, as well as state agencies, local governments, and professional organizations. CAS supports faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Health, and the Chemistry, Microbiology, and Statistics departments in the College of Science.
As part of their role in the college, there is an expectation that they embody and advance the principles and practices conveyed in the CAS CARE Commitment document.
