Duties and Responsibilities
This position offers an exciting opportunity to play a crucial role in the leadership and administration of the top-ranked undergraduate business program in Chicago. As a member of the Dean’s Leadership group, the Assistant Dean will contribute to the strategic direction and operations of an undergraduate program with over 2,000 students.
Responsibilities:
  • Dean’s Leadership Group: As a member of the Quinlan Dean’s Leadership group, the Assistant Dean will actively participate in meetings and discussions to develop and implement initiatives that advance the goals and mission of Quinlan’s undergraduate Bachelors in Business Administration program. This hire will work to support the Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Academic Affairs to enhance our undergraduate degree offerings.
  • Program Innovation and Improvement: The Assistant Dean will evaluate current degree program offerings and propose and execute innovations and improvements. This work includes the entire undergraduate BBA portfolio of 13 majors along with specialty minors and include a special focus on assisting the director of the Quinlan Honors Program for high-achieving business students. The Assistant Dean will identify approaches to ensure that Quinlan’s undergraduate programs excel in quality, reputation, and distinctiveness in the business education landscape.
  • Course Inventory and Program Coordination: The Assistant Dean will manage the course inventory process for all undergraduate classes, working closely with University Registration and Records, department chairs, faculty members, and staff colleagues to ensure implementation of updates to the curriculum. This will include maintaining and updating the Course Catalog for Quinlan undergraduate programs and using other university course management software.
  • Advising and Faculty Support: The Assistant Dean will work closely with department chairs to enhance students’ progression through the undergraduate program. Additionally, the Assistant Dean will provide feedback and support to address faculty issues related to academic misconduct, class attendance, and student complaints. This will include working in the Maxient student academic integrity and conduct system to process identified student infractions. This individual will supervise Quinlan’s Director of Advising and work with the full team of academic advisors to Quinlan undergraduates to develop strategies to enhance student retention and graduation rates.
  • Advisor and Manager for U.S./Europe Double Degree: The Assistant Dean will act as the primary academic advisor for students enrolled in the U.S./Europe Double-Degree Program. This program is joint with Universidad Loyola Andalucia in Spain and allows Quinlan undergraduates to earn degrees from both Loyola Chicago and ULA. Promoting and expanding this opportunity to incoming Quinlan undergraduates and working with Quinlan staff to facilitate co-curricular opportunities for these students will be a responsibility for this role.
  • Member of Quinlan Curriculum Committee: The Assistant Dean will serve as a key member of the Curriculum Committee, providing input and insights in review of proposals for new courses and program modifications that aim to enhance Quinlan’s curriculum offerings and ensure alignment with the school’s strategic objectives. This individual will assist in the process of closing the loop on curricular modifications based on findings from the assessment of learning process for AACSB accreditation of the undergraduate program and ensuring compliance with the University’s process of academic program modifications.
  • Review and Selection for Scholarships and Honor Societies: Reviewing applications and selecting candidates for endowed and gift scholarships is an essential responsibility of this Assistant Dean. This includes overseeing the process, ensuring fairness and transparency, and managing the distribution of scholarships. Review of student eligibility and selection for the Alpha Sigma Nu honor society will also be part of the duties in this role.
  • Scheduling Oversight: The Assistant Dean will work closely with the Office Coordinator for Class Scheduling and department chairs to review and make suggestions on the yearly course schedules and coordinating the rollout of seats in freshmen classes each summer. The Assistant Dean will also provide scheduling suggestions for the undergraduate program as needed and work with department chairs to address low enrollment and potential class cancellations.
  • Admissions and Graduation: The Assistant Dean will play a key role in the beginning and conclusion of students’ time at Quinlan. On the front end, the Assistant Dean will work with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to attract applicants and encourage admitted students to choose Quinlan for their undergraduate education, including attending admissions events as needed. The Assistant Dean also will play a part in graduation planning, ensuring smooth execution of ceremonies and events for about 500 Quinlan BBA graduates annually, including honors and awards ceremonies.
  • Other responsibilities as required
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
  • Masters degree.
  • At least three to five years of progressively responsible experience in higher education administration required; teaching experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in developing structured learning objectives and applied curricula.
  • Knowledge of higher education policies, curriculum, operations and procedures, particularly with regard to continuing and professional education.
  • Conversant with group process and understand the role of Jesuit higher education.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in business, higher education, social sciences, or a related field; a doctorate is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in higher education, preferably in a business school setting.
  • Proven track record of success in developing and managing complex academic programs.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to excellence in undergraduate education.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to navigate complex relationships within a higher education environment.
