Description of Work
The Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, part of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR), seeks to address global agriculture and resource challenges. Established in 1914, the department aims to enhance decision-making for public officials, private producers, and agribusinesses by providing unique economic insights, analytical tools, and skills that are not otherwise available.
As the Agricultural Economic Analyst (Temporary), you will:
  • Complete research, data collection, statistical analysis, economic modeling and reporting on topics relevant to Nebraska agriculture. Examples include:
    • Conducting cost-benefit analyses on proposed projects.
    • Assessing the economic impact of regulatory and policy changes.
    • Developing and maintaining financial models to forecast agriculture business outcomes under various scenarios.
    • Providing economic forecasting and modeling to assist with long-term planning.
    • Performing market research to understand competitive dynamics and market trends to identify opportunities for Nebraska agriculture.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations that outline findings, effectively communicate economic concepts and recommend strategies to non-economic stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross disciplinary teams to develop innovative and effective solutions based on economic principles.
  • Active participation in the Center for Agricultural Profitability and potential collaborations with The Bureau of Business Research, Rural Prosperity Nebraska, and other academic units within IANR.

Temporary employees may be appointed for a period of up to two years. Those appointed for more than six months are eligible for benefits from the beginning of the appointment, provided the position is half-time (.50FTE) or greater. Those appointed for six months or less are not eligible for benefits. Benefits for eligible temporary employees include the following: health, dental, vision and life insurance. Within the UNL System, this position is categorized as M/P Temp Salary staff position.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics or related field plus two years related work experience; OR
  • Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics or related field.
  • Strong proficiency in statistical analysis software (Tableau, Stata, or R) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret complex data and provide clear, concise, and actionable recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are preferred but not required:
  • Familiarity with USDA NASS QuickStats and/or Implan.
  • Experience developing spreadsheet-based tools and models, including VBA and pivot tables.
  • Familiarity with conducting sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation concepts and software, such as Palisade @RISK, Simitar, etc.
  • Knowledge of cost-benefit analysis concepts and techniques.
  • Publishing experience in extension, magazines or other media, and/or academic journals.
  • Experience creating and conducting surveys to collect economic data.
