The Dodge Family College of Arts & Sciences Academic Advising Graduate Assistant Program - New Sooner Orientation

New Sooner Orientation (NSO) is a six-week academic orientation program required for First Year/Freshman entering OU students. This summer graduate assistant opportunity is designed to provide interested individuals with meaningful academic advising experience. Selected individuals will welcome new students to OU and meet with them 1-on-1 for their first academic advising appointment. Selected applicants will have two weeks of training and continued support with a full-time academic advisor.  This GA position will run from May 19th, 2025, through July 18th, 2025.

Job Location: Norman Campus/Physical Sciences Center

Required Training: May 19, 2025 - May 30, 202 (9:00am - Noon)

New Sooner Orientation Dates (*selected candidates should be available for all dates):  

• Week 1: Monday 6/2, Wednesday 6/4, *Thursday 6/5 & Friday 6/6
• Week 2: Tuesday 6/1, Wednesday 6/11, Thursday 6/12 & Friday 6/13
• Week 3: Monday 6/16, Tuesday 6/17, Wednesday 6/18, Friday 6/20
• Week 4: *Tuesday 6/24, *Wednesday 6/25, Thursday 6/26 & Friday 6/27
• *There will be no NSO events the week of 6/30-7/4
• Week 5: Monday 7/7, Wednesday 7/9, Thursday 7/10 & Friday 7/11
• Week 6: Tuesday 7/15, Wednesday 7/16, *Thursday 7/17 & Friday 7/18

Time Commitment: Selected candidates will be required to work 9am-12:00pm all training dates and 9:00am – 4:00pm with an hour lunch on all NSO dates.

Stipend: biweekly $1,400 PhD, $1,225 MA Students

Time Off: If selected candidates do have a conflict with 1-2 specific dates, accommodations can be made with at least one-week advance notice)

Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree completed

Application Deadline: Monday, April 14th at 5pm

Responsibilities include:

• Assist students in confirming their declared academic major
• Assist students with course selection
• Refer students to university resources to enhance academic performance and success as necessary
• Perform advising sessions in-person and via Zoom
• Be able to respond to student questions about the University of Oklahoma

Required Education: Bachelor's degree. Must be an incoming or current OU Graduate Student enrolled in the Fall 2025 semester. Enrollment will be verified before employment is offered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Positive rapport building skills with students and DFCAS advising team
• Able to read and interpret university policies and procedures
• Able to solicit, collect, and analyze academic information for accurate advisement to students of appropriate requirements, courses, and majors
• Organized and detail-oriented for accuracy of student data and information
• Effective and concise written and verbal communication skills
• Familiarity with OU enrollment resources such as degree check sheets, Classnav.ou.edu, and ONE.ou.edu preferred.

Advertised Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to sit for extended periods of time doing work on a computer and via the telephone.
• Must be able to engage in repetitive motions, communicate, including expressing oneself or exchanging information with others; see, including color, depth perception and clarity; and hear, including receiving detailed information orally.
