About the Role 

The Global Publishing team in Applied Sciences, part of the Springer Nature (SN) Journals Group, publishes over two hundred scholarly journals. The Senior Publisher, Applied Sciences Journals, will maintain a portfolio of Engineering journals with a focus on enhancing performance of the current titles, exploring opportunities for new acquisitions and launches, and participating in a variety of company-and industry-wide initiatives. 

Role Responsibilities  

The Senior Publisher, under the supervision of the Executive Publisher, is responsible for the growth, development and editorial management of a portfolio of Engineering journals with the aim of becoming market leader within selected disciplines and geographies. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  Strategic management of the portfolio, including prioritization of key titles, preparing and implementing journal development/improvement plans, as well as establishing/monitoring annual performance targets.  Driving the growth and development of a group of journals as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio strategy.  Engaging with Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Board members to develop collaborative, long-term relationships that yields successful journal performance.  Negotiating contracts and renewals that aim toward, and result in, content quality and growth.  Monitoring financial performance and identifying opportunities to increase profitability.  Developing strong working relationships with Applied Sciences colleagues and across departments to represent the market needs of the portfolio.  Attending conferences and meetings, to project, and act upon, trends in the field, establishing yourself as an outstanding publishing expert.  Actively participating in the research communities to conduct market research and predict future trends. Requires traveling (domestic and international) to conferences and universities for in-person conversations with researchers.  Expanding the network of advisors and contributors, following changes within the research community and publishing industry to identify opportunities for new products and services.  Represent the global Applied Sciences Journals team at conferences as needed.  Taking responsibility for timely resolution of research integrity/publication misconduct issues that arise, working closely with the SN Research Integrity Group as appropriate.  Contributing to the wider SN Journals group by taking part in cross-departmental projects and initiatives with respect to publication ethics, data transparency, Open Access practices and policies, Sustainable Development Goals, Diversity and Inclusion, and other industry developments.   

Experience, Skills & Qualifications: 

Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field of study  Proven previous experience within academic publishing  Excellent English-language communication skills  Be numerate and systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail  Excellent interpersonal, networking and acquiring skills, and strong presentation skills  Ability to develop and progress business proposals  Ability to achieve results by setting goals using quality planning, analysis and decision-making skills  Understand the needs and direction of the business in context of market opportunities and threats  Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems, queries, and opportunities  Be diplomatic and assertive when working with demanding stakeholders  Be flexible, able to work in a multi-cultural environment and to show a commercial/entrepreneurial spirit
