About us
The UCL Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering wishes to appoint a high-calibre Research Fellow to work on an EPSRC funded project (PLANET) aiming to develop novel photonics based high resolution, widely tuneable THz spectroscopy instrumentation.
The work will involve understanding of the underpinning physics of THz signal generation to address the bandwidth and power limitations of such systems. The project will also focus on utilising the advances made in photonic and electronic integrated solutions to develop the next generation small foot-print air pollution sensors that can offer accuracy, robustness, and scalability.
About the role
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop expertise in integrated photonic and electronic systems and explore their use in gas spectroscopy, and work closely with leading national and international research institutions and industries to deliver the objectives of the project.
The post holder will have full access to research infrastructure comprising state-of-the-art equipment and probe station for characterising advanced photonic and high speed electronic integrated devices and subsystems, a wide range of simulation packages for designing of advanced photonic and electronic integrated circuits and a variety of training programmes for career development exclusively available to UCL staff.
The post is available immediately and funded for 18 months in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available.
About you
Applicants should have a PhD (or about to submit) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) or a closely-related field (Physics, Computer Science, Material Science). Understanding of the physics of semiconductor devices and photonic subsystems is essential, as well as the ability to simulate and design photonic integrated circuits and RF PCBs. Proven capability in the characterization of advanced photonic integrated circuits and high-speed electronic devices and subsystems is also required. Candidates should possess skills in handling delicate samples. Experience of working in spectroscopy instrumentation is desirable, as well as experience in programming FPGA to implement PID controllers
If the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, appointment will be made as a Research Assistant (Grade 6B). Payment at Grade 7 will be backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis including corrections, once the PhD has been awarded. The salary scale for Research Assistant (Grade 6B), point 25-28 is £38,607 to £41,255 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
