We are looking for a researcher with exceptional analytical and communication skills to join our team supporting decisions about the effective and cost-effective use of medicines, medical devices, diagnostics and other services in the NHS. This is a fixed-term position until 31 July 2027.

Part of the Faculty of Medicine, Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre (SHTAC ) is one of eleven Technology Assessment Review (TAR ) teams, delivering independent evidence reports for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE ) alongside an active programme of other research, including cost-effectiveness analysis in the context of clinical trials, evidence synthesis and decision modelling.
About the role
You will work as part of our health economics and modelling team on projects for NICE. This involves critical appraisal of evidence and industry models, exploration of alternative scenarios and uncertainties, and writing reports for NICE Committees and other stakeholders. You will also contribute to other collaborative research: analysing clinical trial data and developing health economic models.
What we’re looking for:
- A PhD* or equivalent qualification and experience in economics, statistics, operational research or another analytical discipline
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel for data analysis, including advanced features in financial, statistical and lookup formulae, and VBA Macros
- Excellent general IT knowledge and skills, including Word, PowerPoint and reference management software (e.g. EndNote)
Experience of the following is useful:
- Statistical / modelling software, (STATA, R, winbugs)
- Health economic evaluation and decision modelling
- Evidence synthesis (quantitative/network meta-analysis)
- Medical statistics (survival analysis)
- HTA methods and processes
* Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
