The Opportunity:

This Research Associate position will contribute to the CoTide: “Co-design to deliver Scalable Tidal Stream Energy” project while based within the Institute for Infrastructure and the Environment at the University of Edinburgh.  which is funded by EPSRC and in collaboration with colleagues at Universities of Oxford, Edinburgh and Strathclyde. Together, a team of around 35 researchers and academics from these centres will develop holistic integrated models covering all aspects of tidal stream turbine design from hydrodynamics, through structures and fatigue, to reliability. This role is concentrated on the interactions of tidal stream turbine devices with the environment. In alignment with a specific workstream on tidal stream Metocean, Environment and Ecology aspects, this position aims to address key research challenges and inform the co-design process of tidal devices over the range of conditions they are expected to operate.

This role is UE07 and is available in the first instance on a fixed term basis until June 2026. A further extension may be possible, subject to funding. Your skills and attributes for success: 

  • A PhD in Engineering, or a clearly related area, with a focus on Computational Science, or a closely related area.
  • A track-record of research in coastal ocean hydrodynamics, numerical modelling, or a related area.
  • Experience in computational modelling (i.e. Finite Element/ or Finite Volume Modelling) development and applications or a closely related area.
  • Evidence of developing, communicating and presenting new research ideas to scientific audiences.
