We have an exciting opportunity on an EPSRC-funded project to develop fingertip-sized robots through novel 4D printing techniques. The Sheffield Microbotics Lab (SML) at the University of Sheffield is an interdisciplinary group with a focus on miniature robotics technology, developing robots ranging in size from micrometres to fingertip size. SML is developing various types of miniature robots such as self-assembling robots or self-folding ingestible origami robots for biomedicine, and is involved in a wide range of robot design, fabrication, modelling and application research. Sharing expertise with Sheffield Biomedical Robotics Lab, the labs have over 10 researchers in a generous space, including a dedicated cleanroom and equipment line-up for robot fabrication, and chemical and biological corners. The members are also affiliated with Sheffield Robotics which is the fourth leading centre for robotics research in the UK.

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) belongs to the prestigious Faculty of Engineering, which is one of the largest academic communities of engineers in the UK, ranked joint 1st in the UK for Research Environment in the last Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021). Our specific discipline (EEE) is also ranked very highly, which is a marker of our excellence and ambition (QS 2024: 11th in UK, The Guardian 2024: 3rd, The Times Higher 2024: 7th in the UK.
