We invite qualified candidates to apply for a Research Associate position. This project is to explore novel nanoelectronic devices based on 2D materials for energy harvesting. By choosing 2D materials such as graphene with very few scatterers such as impurities, electrons can move without significant scattering. This enables appropriately designed nano-structured devices to guide electrons to a pre-defined direction and thereby harvest thermal energy. The project involves high performance electronic material preparation, nanodevice design and fabrication, DC and AC testing at different temperatures, etc. Zero-threshold nano-rectifiers, including ballistic rectifiers and/or self-switching diodes, will be fabricated on 2D materials and/or other high-performance semiconductors using electron-beam nanolithography and chemical etching. Upon optimisations of individual devices, arrays of such devices will be cascaded to generate enhanced output. The equipment to be utilised shall include metal and dielectric material deposition, photo- and electron-beam lithography, DC and AC testing kits at different temperatures, etc.
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester has a distinguished history dating back to 1905. In June 1948, the world’s first stored-program computer, the Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM), known as “Baby,” was designed and built in the Department by Frederic C. Williams and Tom Kilburn. Today, the Department boasts over 70 academic staff members and state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, 93% of our research was rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
