Location: Sheffield, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime

We are looking for a Research Associate with a background in biological chemistry: Bioconjugation of proteins, Peptide synthesis, and Chemistry of biological building blocks (amino acids, DNA, lipids). The post is for a new and exciting interdisciplinary project aiming at revolutionising the way we measure and understand proton transfer in biology and utilising proton transfer reactions across proteins for sustainability purposes.

The project is part of a funded ERC project, which will give the Research Associate the freedom and responsibility to establish a new facility for bioconjugation within the group, responsible for all chemistry-related topics. The Research Associate will also be given the freedom to pursue novel independent directions in the context of the research group. The position is fully funded for at least 3 years.

The setting of the research group is highly interdisciplinary, and in addition to the primarily Chemistry work related to this job, it can include biological work (protein expression), ultrafast spectroscopy measurements, and even bioelectronic measurements.

The Research Associate will benefit from an excellent mentorship and career development plan. For the long term, the Research Associate will also experience mentorship of graduate students.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • The research associate will be responsible for the development of a new sub-field in the group involving all chemistry-related aspects for the design of new biological building blocks with novel functionalities.

  • Proposing and performing research involving bioconjugation of proteins, synthesis of bio-related molecules, peptide synthesis, DNA modifications, biological probes, etc.

  • Providing leadership as a professional scientist, including supporting/mentoring other students.

  • Collaborating with other researchers within the Chemical and Biological fields across the University.
