Postdoctoral Research Associate

About the Role

We invite applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the School of Mathematical Sciences. The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with Dr Alex Fink on the project “Extensions of matroid Hodge theory”, funded by EPSRC. June Huh’s 2022 Fields Medal was awarded for results including that the Chow ring of any matroid satisfies the Kähler package even when there is no associated Kähler manifold. More recent work of the PI and Andrew Berget has proved Speyer’s 2005 f-vector conjecture by showing that Stanley-Reisner rings associated to every pair of matroids reflect an analogue of Weyman’s geometric method for syzygies. The objectives of this project are to extend these theories to further settings, in particular to subdivisions of flag matroids and to bimatroids and their associated monoid structures, and to relate them to local and global properties of matroid realisation spaces.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is a full time, fixed term appointment for 7 months, with an expected start date of 1 August 2025.

About You

The successful applicant will have, or be about to obtain, a PhD degree in mathematics, or equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience. The applicant should have research experience in matroid theory and in combinatorial algebraic geometry, as well as experience in writing high quality research papers.

About the School

The School of Mathematical Science has an exceptionally strong research presence across the spectrum of areas within Pure and Applied Mathematics, and is currently organised into four research centres, namely: the Centre for Combinatorics, Algebra and Number Theory; the Centre for Complex Systems; the Centre for Geometry, Analysis and Gravitation; and the Centre for Probability, Statistics and Data Science. Following a period of significant growth, the School comprises around 74 academic staff, 7 research assistants and fellows, and 10 members of professional services staff. The School is home to around 70 PhD students, and approximately 1,000 undergraduates.
