Are you ready to embark on a groundbreaking journey in the world of skin biomechanics? We invite you to be a part of a pioneering PhD research project sponsored by world-leading skincare and cosmetics company, Unilever.

About the Project:

In collaboration with the Human Interactions Group (HIG) in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MAC) at the University of Sheffield and Unilever PLC, this cutting-edge research project aims to revolutionise skincare product testing and validation and allows you to become an expert in the field of human skin biomechanics. We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative PhD candidate to lead the development of a technique to directly measure frictional forces through machine learning driven analysis of local strain and deformation data obtained using the digital image correlation (DIC) method. You would be supervised by Professor Matt Carré who is an expert in skin and tissue biomechanics and bio-tribology. You will work closely with other PhD students and post-graduate researchers in HIG and beyond, and spend part of the study seconded to Unilever where you will gain first-hand experience of a R&D environment in industry.

Your Role:

As a PhD researcher, you will play a pivotal role in designing experiments, fabricating test beds, and characterising real human skin and its tribological properties. You will have the opportunity to:

• Conduct research in skin/tissue biomechanics and bio-tribology, with a focus on personal care products.
• Develop code using techniques such as machine learning to analyse videos of skin deformation and skin under controlled loads applied by probes.
• Develop specialised testing equipment and experimental methodologies.
• Develop code that can utilise and analyse data from DIC.
• Enable the code to determine the normal and lateral forces applied, based on the video analysis.
• Collaborate with industry experts and mentors for real-world applications.
• Spend 3 months or more at Unilever as part of your research and training.

Qualifications:

Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.

Knowledge of biomechanics, materials science, experimental research and machine learning.

Excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for innovation.

Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
