About us 

The Department of Global Health & Social Medicine is a unique, interdisciplinary social sciences department at King’s College London founded in 2012. Its mission is to address the changing landscape of global health and medicine through social science perspectives. 

About the role

The Department invites applications for a Lecturer in Health Inequalities Education (Academic Education Pathway). We welcome applicants in any area of the social sciences with an interest in the political, social and economic aspects of health and disease. You should hold a PhD degree in the social sciences or humanities (e.g., anthropology, sociology, history, geography, political science, STS, development studies).

Potential focal areas of interest include but are not limited to domains such as environmental justice, reproductive rights, disability, Indigenous health, antiracism, decolonisation, migration. The range of health topics that might be explored is also open, and could include such topics as social and political determinants of health, post/pandemic health policy-making, health care infrastructures and supply chains, access to medicines and medical technologies, digital technologies, climate change, or other topics, in domains including but not limited to infectious disease, chronic disease, reproductive health, mental health, ageing and the life course. You should have a developing track-record of research, publications, and external funding relative to career stage, and have the ability to demonstrate extensive experience in high quality education a clear leadership trajectory in teaching. 

You will be expected to make a major contribution to teaching on undergraduate degree programmes and to provide academic leadership in teaching and student supervision at all levels. You will have relevant teaching experience and excellent communication skills. Experience or familiarity with the academic environment in the UK is an advantage. You will be expected to carry out administrative duties at senior level within the Department. A commitment to collegiality is essential, as is the ability and willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with researchers and practitioners in a variety of contexts, and with policy makers.

This is a full time post, and you will be offered an indefinite contract

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: 

Essential criteria

  • PhD Degree in a relevant area of the social sciences or humanities (e.g., sociology, anthropology, geography, political science, history, science & technology studies, development studies)
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of a relevant field of expertise
  • Experience of teaching relevant subjects at undergraduate level, with evidence of innovative and effective teaching and ability to engage and inspire students of diverse and international backgrounds
  • Commitment to student learning, supporting student welfare, and enhancing the student experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to use own initiative and think critically
  • Collegiality and willingness to work as part of a team

    • Desirable criteria

  • Developing record of high-quality scholarly publications appropriate to career stage
  • Experience of assessment procedures in UK Higher Education and providing excellent feedback
  • Completion of appropriate training in Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice
  • Experience of academic administration; Experience of providing academic advice and pastoral support to students

    Grade and Salary: £53,149 to £62,422 inclusive of London Weighting Allowance
