Deadline: 13 May 2025

About us:

The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) is a Faculty of King's College London (KCL) and the largest academic community in Europe devoted to the study and prevention of mental illness and brain disease. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 90% of research at the IoPPN was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). The IoPPN's greatest strength is the interdisciplinary nature of both its research strategy and educational activities, providing unique opportunities for students and staff.

The IoPPN currently runs two very successful BSc programmes in Psychology and in Neuroscience and Psychology, both accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). It is expected that our brand-new BSc Psychology and Criminology programme, also accredited by the BPS and which starts in September 2025, will build on these successes and expand the IoPPN’s portfolio of areas of interest.

This post will, at least initially, sit within the Centre for Education Development and Research (CEDAR) at the IoPPN. However, the postholder will also have an active affiliation to one of the Departments at the IoPPN (to be determined) and will work very closely with colleagues across other Departments, including the Department of Psychology, the Department of Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Sciences, and the Dickson Poon School of Law (DPSoL).

The IoPPN currently has staff based at both the Denmark Hill and Guy’s campuses. It is expected that this role will based at KCL’s Waterloo Campus from September 2025, but some flexibility regarding work location will be needed, especially in the first few months following appointment.

King’s also welcomes hybrid working, and many academic staff choose to work from home for up to three days a week when not required to be on campus for teaching or other meetings.

About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Lecturer (Education) to join us to contribute to the new BSc Psychology and Criminology programme at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London (IoPPN, KCL). The postholder will, in particular, initially contribute to the successful delivery of first year modules in core areas of crime, criminal justice, and criminology, and academic study skills, and act as personal tutor to support students on the programme. As the course develops, the postholder will, in time, have responsibility for developing and delivering one or more second year core modules and/or final year optional modules commensurate, where possible, with their area of expertise. We therefore welcome applications that demonstrate expertise across a range of contemporary criminological areas of interest including, but not limited to, victimology, cybercrime, penology, policing, contemporary criminological theory, criminological research methods, and broader issues relating to crime and its social context.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated colleague who can make a distinctive contribution to education. We are particularly interested in recruiting someone with a background in teaching Criminology and Criminal Justice, and/or who has a current programme of Criminology-related research, pedagogical research, and/or research which impacts on the student experience and creates evidence-based teaching. You should have excellent teaching and communication skills and be able to inspire and inform students.

You should also have experience of learning, teaching, and assessment in criminology-related subjects at undergraduate level. The ability to contribute to introductory modules in criminology and criminal justice would also be desirable.

The appointment will be made at Lecturer level on the Academic Education Pathway, where the primary contribution is to education (80% of role) and secondary contribution to scholarship (20%). On average, this would be the equivalent of four days a week spent on education. The AEP contract is focused on the delivery of education, education and subject-specific scholarship, and leadership in education. The following expectations are associated with the AEP: teaching, supervision, student support, educational leadership and innovation, education-related and subject-specific research, and administration. Promotion is possible throughout the Academic Education Pathway, up to the level of Professor (Education). The content of a member of staff’s workload will be decided in discussion with the Head of Department or line manager.

We are deeply committed to embedding good equality and diversity practice into all our activities so that the university is an inclusive, welcoming, and inspiring place to work and study. The IoPPN strives to be an open and supportive community, with a strong emphasis on working practices that promote diversity and inclusion.

This is a full-time position and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

Interviews will take place in the week commencing 26th May 2025.
