Internal Applicants Only - Lecturer in Philosophy (T&S)
The School of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Philosophy on a fixed term basis on the Teaching and Scholarship pathway.  The successful candidate will be able to teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in feminist philosophy and undergraduate modules in social epistemology and the philosophy of language.

Candidates will have the potential for a national academic reputation relevant to the above fields, a record of high-quality publications and teaching, and the enthusiasm and drive to play a key role in enhancing the School’s reputation for impactful research and community engagement.
The successful applicant will contribute to teaching provision across Philosophy’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the fields identified above. An ability and willingness to teach in other areas of philosophy will also be advantageous. Bringing engaging and innovative approaches to module delivery and assessment, along with a commitment to delivering excellent student experience, the successful applicant will contribute to the enhancement of distinctive provision at Cardiff.  Engage effectively with academic, professional and public institutions and groups to raise the School’s profile, cultivate strategic alliances and enhance the School’s ambition to be a creative and inclusive community renowned for its impact on policy, practice and public life.  

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), fixed-term to cover a period of maternity leave, from 1 June 2025 until 31 August 2026.
Salary: £40,497 - £45,413 per annum (Grade 6).   New appointments are usually made at the bottom of the salary scale.

Job Description

Job Purpose

Undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules within the undergraduate and postgraduate provision within the School. To supervise students and to carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To pursue excellence in teaching and to inspire others to do the same

Teaching 

  • Design and deliver modules and contribute to module development as part of a module team  

  • Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor or module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students. 

  • Supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students  

  • Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust 

Scholarship 

  • Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship   

  • Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles or other outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work 

  • Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community 

  • Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work 

Other 

  • Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile 

  • Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer 

  • Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world 

  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role. 


Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge and current advancements within academic subject area
  • Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes.

  • Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.

  • Other
  • Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking.
  • Desirable Criteria
  • An appropriate qualification in teaching at Higher Education level.  
  • Proven ability to work without close supervision
  • Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the School.
  • A willingness to take responsibility for academically related administration.
