Finance Co-ordinator* (Part-time) (Fixed Term) (Suitable for secondment**)

Reporting to the Academic Secretary, this role is a temporary backfill position for part of the Department's Finance Manager role whilst they are assisting with the Finance Division's Transformation Project work stream. This is a particularly busy role as Chemistry is a large department with over 650 academics, support staff, contract researchers and postgraduates. The role fulfils the important role of dealing with the process management element of accounts work. The role has general oversight of the operational work of the Accounts office plus line-manages the Deputy Head of Accounts and has overall responsibility for all the accounts office staff.

Duties will include leading the half-year and year-end processes, providing secondary approval for invoices >£10k, reviewing and approving academic expense claims, keeping a rolling income/expenditure plan as income increases and estimated expenditure becomes known, providing account management services to the department and overseeing preparation of monthly accounts for budget-holders.

The role holder will need to ensure compliance with HM Revenue and Customs legislation i.e. VAT treatment of sales and to provide specialist advice and support to all members of the department in compliance with University Financial Regulations and Finance Procedures.

Having attained a degree level education or equivalent experience plus have a Financial/Accounting qualification at Professional Diploma level, the successful candidate will have a working knowledge of VAT and HMRC employee benefits regulations.

A good working knowledge of finance systems in a large organisation is essential, as is substantial experience in a senior finance management role with staff management, in a similar organisation. They must also have experience of Oracle Financials or something similar. In addition, they will have excellent organisational and good communication skills, excellent IT skills, combined with good project management skills. They will have the ability to use own initiative, deal with a wide range of people at all levels and meet deadlines under pressure whilst maintaining attention to detail.

The role is 21-24 hours per week, days and hours to be worked will be negotiable on appointment.

  • This role is backfill cover so the funds for this post are available for two years in the first instance or the return of the post holder whichever is the earlier.
