The Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (FHASS) is seeking to appoint part time Discipline Leads across the four Schools of Arts, Global Affairs, Law and Social Sciences.  This is an exciting opportunity to take up an influential leadership role and to work to deliver a sustainable future for the humanities, arts and social sciences at Lancaster University. 

This leadership role is open to internal applicants only who must be an academic colleague within the newly formed relevant Discipline and School and also hold a substantive post that exceeds the duration of the term of the appointment.  Applicants will normally be at Senior Lecturer level or above, however appointments will be made depending on the context, objectives and circumstances of the School at the time and on the skills and experience of particular candidates.  

Term of office

You will be expected to begin on 1 August 2025.  The position amounts to an appointment within a range from 0.2 to 0.5fte dependent on numbers of staff, students and programmes; the appointment is usually for a three-year term, e.g. unless extended or renewed within the faculty’s leadership roles appointment process.  At the end of their term, the role holder ceases their Discipline Lead responsibilities, returning to their substantive role.  

The role

The Discipline Lead supports academic and operational leadership; encourages excellence in teaching, research and engagement; contributes to the management and development of the Discipline, its staff and its activities through the most effective and cost-effective use of resources and within the framework of the University strategic plan and policies, builds and maintains a sustainable and vibrant disciplinary community/identity by generating a culture of mutual respect, high performance and ambition in conjunction with the School Leadership Group, and represents the Discipline internally and externally.

Interviews of shortlisted candidates will take place between 30 April – 16 May 2025, with the panel being chaired by the FHASS Executive Dean or a member of the FHASS leadership team.
