Overview of the Role

Are you a second or penultimate year undergraduate student at the University of Leeds looking to take a year-in-industry as part of your degree? Would you like to gain skills and experiences relevant for a career in the arts and cultural sector such as cultural production, project management, and partnerships development?    

The Cultural Institute is dedicated to developing research collaborations with creative sector partners, fostering cultural engagement, and enhancing student learning and skills. 

This is a developmental role to support a current student to develop skills, experiences and knowledge relevant for a career in the cultural sector or higher education. You will gain hands-on experience supporting research funding opportunities, creative collaborations, student opportunities, partnership facilitation, and co-delivery of cultural programming with arts professionals, staff and students at the University of Leeds.  You will also have the chance to work with the on-campus cultural venues and producers to support us in promoting a campus cultural offer. Through your internship, you’ll learn about the operation and impact of partnerships between universities and cultural organisations,, as well as developing creative production, administration and project management skills.   

As Cultural Institute Project Management Assistant, you will receive training, support and mentorship (within and beyond the university) to meet your specific development needs. You will also have the opportunity to develop wider experience of the cultural sector by undertaking a collaborative project with a Cultural Institute partner.

With an interest in pursuing a career in the cultural and creative industries or higher education, you will have excellent organisational and planning skills and the ability to complete tasks to agreed deadlines. You will also have strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team; with a positive and proactive approach to problem solving and making improvements. Strong IT skills and proficiency in the use of MS Office products (particularly Word and Excel) are essential. 


Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the administration and coordination of our key projects and programmes. This will include working closely with Cultural Institute staff and internal/external partners to perform administration tasks such as arranging meetings and events, record keeping, data management and communications;  
  • Support the delivery of key events throughout the year including research workshops, cultural events and stakeholder engagement activities;  
  • Under guidance, conduct desktop research to support project development and compiling project and briefing materials as required;  
  • With the support of your line-manager, communicate with internal and external partners, and respond efficiently and professionally to enquiries;  
  • Keep records for documentation, clarification and presentation to management;  
  • Build effective working relationships within the Cultural Institute team and contributing to team decisions where appropriate.
