Archaeology South-East is part of UCL – a global multidisciplinary university with a diverse community and progressive approach to teaching and research. As part of the UCL Institute of Archaeology, research and learning are at our core - and we want you to work with us to continue delivering on this mission.
We take pride in delivering high quality project outcomes for our clients, working hard to maximise research and public benefit from development-led fieldwork. We work for a range of people supporting development and infrastructure projects as well as heritage management. Our large team provides a comprehensive range of services and areas of specialist expertise so there are plenty of people to learn from as your career in archaeology progresses.
If you’re new to commercial archaeology, working at Archaeology South-East will provide you with the training needed and opportunities to develop your skills and experience within a supportive team environment.
We are currently recruiting for projects running from our office in Portslade, Brighton and we have several new projects starting, most significantly an opportunity to work on the long running excavation of an extensive Roman settlement site in West Sussex. We require additional field archaeologists to excavate and record archaeological features and deposits and collect artefacts and samples. There are opportunities for immediate starts with minimum initial contract length of 12 months and with excellent prospects for contract extensions as work progresses. Whilst we have local work coming up, staff are sometimes required to undertake stay away work.
You are likely to have a degree in Archaeology (or a related discipline) and some fieldwork experience – that may include some time working on development-led projects, but if not, we will provide all the training you need. We are particularly keen on recruiting staff based on the West Sussex coast and preference will be given to those based locally. Holding a driving license and being willing to drive for work is also highly desirable.
Please provide a clear statement in response to each of the selection criteria, which shows how your qualifications, experience and training fit each of them. Please provide one or two sentences addressing each criterion (it is expected that more detailed evidence will be available in your CV).
It would be very helpful if you could order this statement in line with the selection criteria in the “Person Specification” at the end of the Job description. Your responses to all the selection criteria form an essential part of the selection process and a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as 'Please see attached CV' will not be considered acceptable.
