Offer Description

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

The selected candidate will work on the AP4L project, helping develop new tools, methods and best practices for protecting and empowering the privacy and online safety of people undergoing critical life transitions such as domestic abuse, coming out as LGBTQIA+, chronic or life changing illnesses or transitions from sensitive jobs such as military. While there is considerable research flexibility and independence within this larger scope, this specific opening seeks to pursue two lines of research which have emerged recently, one relating to developing new ways for private communications for whistleblowers, using new emerging networks such as satellites, and one relating to evaluating the utility and usability of specific privacy preserving tools being developed within this project.

About you

The ideal candidate will have a PhD or be close to finishing a PhD (e.g., in writing up phase). It is also essential to have expertise in either of two subjects of interest mentioned above. Specifically, we are interested in candidates with expertise in a) emerging satellite constellations, as well as Internet of Things, especially as relates to the ground footprint of such networks. b) developing and evaluating usability and security of privacy enhancing technologies for life transitions such as domestic abuse, coming out as LGBTQIA+, chronic or life changing illnesses or transitions from sensitive jobs such as military.

How to apply

Please contact Prof. Nishanth Sastry (n.sastry@surrey.ac.uk ) for any questions or clarifications. It is expected that candidates will be interviewed early February. Up to two posts are available to be filled.
