Description
The Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking to appoint a full-time Research Technician in the Chemical and Functional Genomics Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Kristin Gunsalus.
The laboratory focuses on addressing emergent challenges that pose considerable threats to human health and the environment by exploring novel bioactive agents derived from microbial sources and chemical libraries. The Research technician will play an integral role in supporting the team’s operational and research activities, contributing to a project that aims to find novel biocontrol agents to manage the spread of Red Palm weevils (RPW), a major threat to palm trees. In this role, the key responsibilities will include:
- Provide technical assistance in preparing commonly used media, bacterial and chemical solutions; maintaining stocks of laboratory reagents and supplies; and breeding RPW in the lab.
- Handle microbial libraries and perform microbiological assays: monitoring of culture growth; and conducting microbial isolation, identification, enumeration and phenotypical characterization.
- Screen a library of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains for a virulence phenotype against RPW, and evaluate the impact of the virulent Bt candidate strains on RPW fitness and biology.
- Assist in identifying and the characterizing Bt virulence factors using molecular, genomic, proteomic, and bioinformatic approaches.
- Perform basic microscopy and imaging tasks.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in molecular biology, microbiology, or a related field, with demonstrated experience in a biology research laboratory, emphasizing a meticulous approach to optimizing assays and producing high-quality data. Experience in bioinformatics and bacterial genomics is highly desirable.
The terms of employment include a highly competitive salary, housing allowance, and other benefits. This position is available from January 1, 2025 and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. To be considered, applications must be submitted through Interfolio including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, a Transcript, and two recommendation letters, all in PDF format. If you have any questions, please send your inquiries to nyuad.cgsb.chemgen@nyu.edu .
