The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.
This call is part of the KI-SciLifeLab Clinical Translational Postdoc Program with the purpose of promoting interaction between the SciLifeLab research environment and clinical research environments at Karolinska Institutet. The postdocs that are recruited to the program will form a network with the support of the SciLifeLab Committee KI.
This is a joint postdoctoral position between the lab of Andrea Fossati (KI/MTC, SciLIfeLab) and the lab of Christian Giske (KI/LabMed) focused on the developing of phage-based antimicrobials.
Your mission
The available postdoc position concerns developing and testing new antimicrobials based on phages on multi-drug resistant pathogens of clinical concern (E. coli, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, A. baumannii, M. tuberculosis, M. abscessus). Overall, we aim to develop new combination therapies using phages and develop phage therapeutics which are well understood and ready to be tested in pre-clinical models.
Your profile
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
In addition to the aforementioned requirements:
- Strong background in microbiology and antimicrobial resistance
- Expertise in bacterial culture and phenotypic screenings
- Extensive knowledge of antimicrobial testing in BSL2/BSL3 settings
- Basic molecular cloning (primers design, PCR, restriction, ligation, Golden Gate assembly, competent cells preparation, bacterial transformation, plasmid purification, gel electrophoresis,etc)
- Basic biochemistry (protein expression, purification, western blots, immunofluorescence)
- Knowledge of virology/phage biology techniques (plaque assay, phage isolation, etc)
- Working knowledge of comparative genomics / sequence analysis
