As Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor/Full Professor, you will contribute to research and education in materials chemistry and chemical engineering, focusing on future battery technologies. The position is part of a strategic initiative from the Swedish government – Competence and Excellence in battery research and education of the transport sector (COMPEL). Within COMPEL, Chalmers, Lund University and Uppsala University are responding to the need to ensure the long-term competitiveness of the automotive industry and Sweden as a whole. Your role
As a faculty member at Chalmers, you will:
- Conduct high-impact research on battery materials, including synthesis, processability, and interface engineering.
- Develop new materials, for example anodes, cathodes, and electrolytes, focusing on performance, scalability and real-world applications.
- Collaborate with leading academic and industrial partners in Sweden and internationally.
- Supervise and mentor students at undergraduate, graduate, and PhD levels.
- Contribute to teaching and curriculum development in chemistry and chemical engineering.
- Support an inclusive, dynamic, and collaborative academic environment.

Your profile
We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in materials chemistry and a passion for battery innovation.
Required qualifications
- PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven research track record, including publications in leading journals.
- Experience in battery materials research, including material synthesis, characterization, or process development.
- Interest in applying research to real-world energy challenges.
- Experience in supervising and mentoring students.
- Ability to secure research funding
- Teaching experience.
Additional merits (considered a plus)
- Experience in industry collaboration and technology transfer.
- Background in scaling up innovations for industrial use.
Academic qualifications
The appointment level (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor/Full Professor) will be determined based on experience and qualifications. A full definition of the requirements and conditions for each academic level can be found in Chapter 6 in our Appointment Regulations .
Key qualifications for Professor and Full Professor
- Research excellence – High-quality, internationally recognized research. Full Professors must demonstrate a leading international position and strong research funding record.
- Academic leadership – Professors should develop research fields; Full Professors must lead research teams and secure major funding.
- Doctoral supervision – Professors must have supervised at least one PhD student from start to completion; Full Professors at least three PhD students.
- Higher education pedagogy – Certified in pedagogy and research supervision, with strong teaching skills.
Key qualifications for Associate Professor
- Research excellence – Independent international research and proven ability to secure funding.
- Academic leadership potential – Ability to develop and lead research fields.
- Higher education pedagogy – Certified in pedagogy and research supervision, with strong teaching skills.
- Doctoral supervision – Experience as an assistant or primary PhD supervisor.
Key qualifications for Assistant Professor (Tenure-track)
- Research excellence – PhD completed within seven years prior to the application deadline*, and published research in reputable scientific forums.
- Funding and collaboration – Experience in applying for research funding and building national/international networks.
- Postdoctoral experience – Research experience beyond PhD, preferably at a different institution.
- Teaching potential – Interest and potential in education, demonstrated through teaching experience, educational materials, or pedagogical training.
* Exceptions can be made for longer periods due to parental leave, sick leave, or military service. The date stated on your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as it indicates when you have fulfilled all the requirements for the doctoral degree.
