Department of Clinical Sciences

The Department of Clinical Sciences conducts undergraduate education, research and postgraduate education in the scientific fields of veterinary medicine, animal care and animal science. The department's activities mainly concern our usual Swedish domestic animal species with a focus on anaesthesiology, imaging, animal care, epidemiology, experimental animal science, surgery, clinical chemistry, medicine and reproduction. The veterinary teaching hospital (VTH) is part of the department.

Subjec desription

Porcine medicine covers all aspects of porcine medical diseases including clinical signs, pathogenesis, pathology, diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis, both at individual and herd level.

Duties

This is a fixed-term appointment (4 years) as regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance. The role of associate senior lecturer is a career-development position that is the first step on the academic career path at SLU.

The associate senior lecturer must develop an individual research profile within their subject. Research is expected to take place in collaboration with researchers both at the department and throughout the university. National and international collaborations are also expected. During their employment, an associate senior lecturer is entitled to apply for an evaluation review for promotion to senior lecturer. They will be assessed based on the criteria that are established when advertising the position of associate senior lecturer. 

In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to


  • compete for external research funding and publish scientific articles;

  • act as an assistant supervisor for doctoral students;

  • plan, develop, teach and examine theoretical and practical components at first, second and third cycle levels;

  • participate in clinical teaching

  • participate in the required training in teaching and learning in higher education;

  • collaborate and communicate with relevant players in the community

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position as associate senior lecturer, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree or hold the equivalent academic expertise. Primary consideration should be given to someone who has been awarded a doctoral degree, or fulfils the eligibility requirement within seven years of the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. 

The applicant must


  • demonstrate scientific competence in the subject for the appointment;

  • be licensed to practise veterinary medicine in Sweden, alternatively be entitled to obtain such a licence in accordance with the relevant legislation, regulations and directives

  • have documented clinical experience relevant to the subject

  • have good knowledge of English and Swedish..

*Act (2009:302 ) on Activities within Animal Healthcare, Chapter 3. Eligibility regulations, Swedish Board of Agriculture’s regulations and general advice on eligibility requirements for veterinary care staff (SJVFS 2016:9 ), Chapter 2. Eligibility to practise as a veterinary surgeon and the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 2005 on the recognition of professional qualifications.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as associate senior lecturer must be the degree of expertise required as qualification for employment.

Additionally, the following are to be assessed:


  • The ability to develop an independent research profile within the subject for the appointment.

  • The applicant has the possibility to reach the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer as part of the career-development position.

  • The applicant has experience of both theoretical and clinical teaching at first cycle level.

The appointment will be offered to the applicant who, following a qualitative comprehensive assessment, is in the best position to conduct and develop the duties in question, and contribute to the positive development of the organisation.

It is considered to be of merit if the applicant has an international specialist competence (Diplomate) in a subject relevant to the position.

* Swedish “biträdande universitetslektor”, a tenured position approximately equivalent to Associate senior lecturer (UK) or Assistant professor (US). The applicant who is offered this employment at SLU will be employed as Associate senior lecturer.
