Job Description
The laboratory of Prof. Ashok Venkitaraman focuses on uncovering the mechanisms underlying human cancer susceptibility, with the aim of developing innovative strategies for early cancer detection and prevention. A hallmark of cancer evolution, genome instability arises early in carcinogenesis due to the failure of mechanisms safeguarding genome integrity. The lab employs a multidisciplinary approach spanning molecular cell biology, single-cell/single-molecule imaging, structural biology, biophysics, and chemistry to translate fundamental discoveries into clinical applications.
One major focus is on the breast cancer gene BRCA2, whose critical role in maintaining genome integrity and preventing cancer was first elucidated by the lab. Research efforts include elucidating BRCA2’s functions, understanding how tissue-specific mechanisms contribute to genome instability, and developing cutting-edge technologies to intercept cancer progression.
-
Research Leadership:
- Design and execute experiments to investigate the molecular and structural mechanisms by which BRCA2 and associated factors maintain genome integrity.
- Explore how cancer-causing mutations in BRCA2 influence genome instability and contribute to tissue-specific carcinogenesis.
-
Technology Development and Application:
- Utilize innovative platforms, including single-cell/single-molecule imaging and light microscopy, to dissect cellular signaling pathways and DNA repair processes.
- Apply structural biology and biophysical techniques to understand protein-protein interactions and their therapeutic potential.
-
Translation to Clinical Applications:
- Collaborate with the A*STAR team to develop therapeutic and diagnostic strategies targeting genome instability in high-risk individuals.
- Engage with industry and venture capital partners to facilitate the development of next-generation cancer therapies.
-
Scholarly Dissemination:
- Prepare high-quality manuscripts for publication in leading scientific journals.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences.
-
Collaboration and Mentorship:
- Work closely with an interdisciplinary team spanning academia and industry.
- Mentor junior researchers and students in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication.
Qualifications
- PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, biophysics, or a related field, with 1–3 years of relevant post-doctoral experience.
- Strong track record of research achievement, as evidenced by high-quality publications in relevant fields.
- High-level experience in hands-on use of a wide range of molecular and cell biology techniques related to genome stability, DNA repair, or chromatin biology.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and creatively to solve experimental challenges.
- Effective communication and presentation skills, with experience in authoring scientific papers, giving presentations, and preparing reports.
Highly Desirable:
- Experience in generating, maintaining, and experimenting with GEM (genetically engineered mouse) models.
- Expertise in the generation, maintenance, manipulation, and experimentation involving organoid models.
- Proficiency in CRISPR and/or base editing techniques, particularly in organoid systems.
- Experience in preparing and submitting IRB protocols and managing clinical samples.
- Strong background in immunology.
