Principal Research Fellow (Optical Tools for Molecular Analytics)

The Principal Research Fellow – Optical Tools for Molecular Analytics will work collaboratively with the researchers from the Institute for Digital Molecular Analytics and Science (IDMxS) on projects involving the application of innovative optical tools, design new optical characterization platforms, publish research results, and apply for research funding to support research projects centered around the application of optics principles toward the development of new molecular and biological detection techniques.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with and train/educate IDMxS researchers on projects involving advanced optical techniques and microscopy

  • Train personnel in the use and maintaining home-built microscope systems and other devices (plasma cleaner, zeta-sizer, lasers etc.)

  • Develop innovative experimental optical techniques and methods

  • Establish, maintain, and apply optical characterization capabilities that can be integrated with molecular detection technologies developed at IDMxS, while troubleshooting technical issues and liaise with external vendors on repairs and servicing

  • Publish research in scientific journals.

  • Apply for competitive research funding and manage funded research projects

  • Mentor junior researchers and students

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in Optics, Microscopy, Engineering, or related disciplines and at least 10 years of relevant research experience preferred

  • Have a strong optics foundation: understand fundamental optical principles, which include geometrical optics, wave optics, microscopy and imaging, fluorescence, plasmonics, and quantum optics

  • Prior experience in analysis of experimental data using statistical analysis and data visualization techniques

  • Background in quantum optics

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on interdisciplinary research projects

  • Ability to balance multiple research projects, meet deadlines and effectively collaborate with partners of different backgrounds and levels of expertise
