Overview
The Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) at the National Institute of Education in Singapore comprises the Chinese, Malay, and Tamil Divisions. ALC’s vision is to work towards the mission of NIE and establish ALC as a Centre of Excellence for Chinese, Malay and Tamil Languages, Literature, Culture and Education. We aim to nurture excellent teacher-researchers devoted to the development and promotion of mother tongue language education, Asian values and cultures as pillars of Singapore’s national identity and harmony. Student teachers who enrol in our programmes can expect to receive a firm academic foundation in content knowledge of their area studies as well as current knowledge in curriculum and pedagogy. ALC’s research places emphasis on high-impact interdisciplinary content, pedagogical innovation, challenging existing theories and extending the prevalent boundary of Asian studies.
