Offer Description

A Research Fellowship (BI) (Reference REQUIMTE 2025-15) on the project VolWood - Volatile profile characterization of wood-based panels leading to new production strategies using forest and agricultural surpluses, with the reference PTDC/CTM-PAM/1348/2021, supported by national funds by FCT / MCTES, is available at REQUIMTE.

Admission requirements:

BSc degree in Chemistry or related scientific area, with a minimum final grade of 15 in the 0-20 scale. Frequency of an MSc in Chemistry or a related scientific area or be enrolled and/or attending a non-degree course taught by a higher education institution in collaboration with an R&D unit. The applicant should have laboratorial experience with common analytical chemistry practices, knowledge of extraction methods for volatile organic compounds in complex matrices and proficiency in basic chemistry analysis techniques (liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, spectrophotometry and mass spectrometry).

 

In case the BSc degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007 of October 12th, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the signature of Fellowship contract.

 

Working planThe selected candidate will carry out experimental work in accordance with the objectives of the research project associated with this grant. The grantee will be responsible for (i) developing and optimizing analytical methodologies for the extraction of volatile organic compounds from wood-based panels; (ii) analyzing the obtained extracts using appropriate techniques (e.g., chromatography and mass spectrometry); and (iii) identifying and characterizing the volatile organic compounds emitted from wood-based panels produced under different conditions. Occasionally, the selected candidate may need to go to the Wood Engineering Department of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu to perform tasks related to the production of wood-based panels.

Work Place: The work will be conducted at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry - Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto – QuaQua/LAQV-REQUIMTE, under the scientific guidance of Doctor Rui Miguel Ramos.

 

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will have a duration of 6 months, starting on 01 May of 2025.

 

Monthly stipend: 

Monthly stipend is €1.040,98 according to the stipend values established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.p… ). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

 

Selection criteriaThe selection methods will be:

  • BSc final grade (50%);
  • Level of adequacy of the BSc scientific area within the scope of the work plan (20%);
  • Relevant experience with analytical chemistry and analytical chemistry analysis techniques, namely chromatographic and spectrophotometric (30%).
  • Interview:

    In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. In this situation, the final score is obtained by the following assessment: 70% curricular evaluation and 30% interview.

    The jury will not award the current scholarship to candidates with a final classification lower than 50%.
