The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a position as
Postdoctoral Fellow in Risk Management and Societal Safety related to hydrogen at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Safety, Economics and Planning.
The position is vacant now and the starting date is no later than 01.11.2025.
The aim of the position is for the successful candidate to develop a research profile and gain the qualifications required to be eligible for a position as an Associate Professor. Additionally, the position may provide valuable experience and other competencies relevant to the postdoctoral researcher’s career development.
Postdoctoral Fellow is employed for a period of 3 years.
The qualifying project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that she/he will participate in the academic community.
The position will be affiliated with the Environment-friendly Energy Research center - HyValue. The center is hosted by NORCE, and will develop knowledge, methodology, and innovative solutions for hydrogen energy carriers. HyValue has a broad coverage, covering the entire hydrogen value-chain with a holistic approach. Risk and safety is one of the main focus areas in the center.
The University of Stavanger has a lead on the work package on risk and safety that the candidate will be working on, and there will be a close collaboration with research and industry partners in the work package and in the project. The candidate will specifically be working on safety regulation and risk communication in relation to how the Norwegian society enables the development of hydrogen systems as energy carriers. This entails, among others, challenges related to new activities, system limitations, functional requirements and regulation, attitudes towards and perception of hydrogen activities, communication, uncertainty and learning. An important part of the work will be to contribute with knowledge about historical development of hydrogen as an energy carrier to improve the knowledge foundation for the potential for hydrogen as sustainable hydrogen solutions in the future.

Project proposal
You must submit a description of a research project within the subject area and plan for its completion. The project proposal must show how you will proceed to carry out the research work, what the key issues and hypotheses will be, what theories and methods you will apply, publication channels and a schedule for carrying out the work. It must be clear from the application in what way the project will add your competence. The project proposal will be included in the competence assessment.
The final project description and progress plan are drawn up in consultation with the supervisor (s) during the first three months of the employment period. It is a prerequisite that you complete the project during the employment period.
Qualification requirements
You must have a have a have a PhD and master’s degree within Risk Management and Societal Safety. The PhD thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession. You must have advanced knowledge about societal safety, regulation and systems thinking.
You should preferably have an inter-disciplinary background that provides a basis for understanding and analyzing hydrogen systems in society.
It is also desirable that you have experience with teaching or supervision at master's level in the field.
You must have a good command of both oral and written English and Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language).
The following will also be considered an advantage:
- analytical abilities regarding safety related issues
- ability to critically reflect upon societal approaches to new technologies and new knowledge, competence and experiences
- experience with hydrogen safety and regulation of hydrogen as an energy carrier
- experience with and knowledge about actors that work with the hydrogen value chain and how safety is managed in their activities
In the assessment the following criteria will be emphasised:
- relevance, quality and feasibility of the project
- submitted scientific work and your personal skills for completing the project within the time frame
- international experience and network
- qualifications within the areas of creativity, innovation and commercialisation of research
- good teamwork, communication skills and ability to participate in research communities across organisational units
- ability to work independently in a structured manner
- motivation, sense of responsibility and accountability, work capacity and enthusiasm for research
