PhD position

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Quantum Technologies at the Department of Physics and Technology. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The position is subject to financing by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

The project aims to create innovative quantum sensing techniques using color centers in diamond. In the project, a novel quantum diamond microscope (QDM) will be designed, built and tested to detect and analyse various biomarkers associated with cancer. The QDM will be also used to study mechanics and perturbations of cell membranes arising due to mechanical cues in their local microenvironments.

The PhD fellow position involves tasks such as designing and developing the QDM setup, performing quantum sensing of biomarkers, analysing data, and investigating cellular membranes using advanced quantum sensing protocols. The fellow will have the chance to participate in designing and evaluating novel quantum sensing modalities, which will be an integral part of the project.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in physics or nanoscience. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 01.07.2025. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • Laboratory work experience is a requirement.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Experience from one or several of the following areas is an advantage:

The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment.

The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).
