Offer Description

The European Commission proposes the implementation of digital product passports (DPPs) un-der its Green Deal to promote circular business practices, reduce CO2 emissions, and enhance resource efficiency. A DPP is a publicly accessible record which provides information about a product's lifecycle, from production to disposal or recycling, aimed at improving transparency, traceability, and efficiency in industries to support better environmental sustainability. DPPs utilize digital technologies to manage and share product information globally and across diverse industries, such as consumer goods, healthcare, and electronics. DPPs typically contain a mix of numerical, categorical, and textual data, besides their linguistic aspects, e.g., being multilingual.

However, the concept and standards of DPPs are still under development, facing challenges in data processing, such as missing data and duplication. The SecondPass project aims to address these issues to facilitate the scalable design and realization of DPPs.

The main goal of the announced PhD position is to focus on the linguistic aspects of DPPs with respect to multilingualism, localization, terminologies, etc. Working in close collaboration with project partners, the PhD candidate will conduct extensive studies on different types of DPPs and their content and semantics in industries such as consumer goods, work on relevant linguistic analysis and classification techniques, and apply appropriate AI techniques such as Autoencoders and Transformers to address concerns related to DPP textual content such as data gaps and re-dundancy.
