Offer Description

[Background of the recruitment and description of the project]
* Background of the recruitment and description of the project
Sado Island has rich resources for education and research, which include forests, “satoyama” (socio-ecological production landscapes), and marine ecosystems. The “satoyama” ecosystem is a mosaic landscape of forest managed for firewood and charcoal, arable fields and rice paddies, inhabited by the “Toki” (crested ibis). The Sado Island Center for Ecological Sustainability of Niigata University was established in April 2019 after the integration of 3 facilities, formerly the University Forest of Faculty of Agriculture, the Center for Toki & Ecological Restoration and the Marine Biological Station of the Faculty of Science. The three divisions of forest, satoyama, marine along with the office for community design, will collaborate on a variety of research projects. These aim to understand the mechanisms within the ecosystem of Sado Island, and establish ecological and communal sustainability by developing citizen science with local stakeholders.
