The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) is one of the world's leading research institutes in the fields of III/V seminconductors and synthetic diamond. Together with our partners from industry and science, we research and develop electronic, optoelectronic and quantum technological components and systems. The focus is on research and development for applications in the fields of security, health, energy, information and communication.
In the field of quantum technology, the institute is working on realizing a quantum computer based on color centres in diamond. We use nitrogen vacancy (NV) centres in diamond to generate qubits. Using microwave CBD, we generate NV centres by doping with nitrogen during the diamond growth and characterize them on site with regard to their spin properties using the existing measurement setups.
As part of the master's thesis, the transfer of microemeter-sized diamond structures doped with NV centers will be developed in order to optically integrate them at the chip level. The aim is an optical connection to initialize and read out the spin state of NV centers in diamond on heterogeneous substrates.
What you will do
- Your tasks include the development and operation of a laboratory setup for the transfer of diamond structures from the substrate to quantum chips.
- You will mount diamond structures on optical fibers for site-selective excitation of NV centers in diamond.
- You will conduct photoluminescence experiments on the confocal microscope.
- The documentation and preparation of measurement results will also be part of your work.
What you bring to the table
- You are enrolled as a student in the field of Physics, Microsystems Technology or a comparable discipline.
- You already have programming skills in Python.
- You are fluent in German or English.
- You enjoy experimental and scientific work.
- You are a team player and are open and motivated to work independently and goal-oriented.
What you can expect
- You gain access to the most modern technologies and laboratory equipments.
- We value an open and team oriented corporate culture that gives you the oportunity to contribute your own ideas.
- You will be assigned diverse and intriguing tasks in the context of an internationally renowned research centre.
- We offer you support at eye-level by experienced scientists and experts throughout your thesis.
- You will be working with an interdisciplinary team on current projects with clear goals.
- We enable you to have an independent time management that is compatible with your studies through flexible working hours.
The weekly working time is 10 hours.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
