Who are we?
IOW is an independent research institute of the Leibniz Association that places particular emphasis on equal opportunities, family friendliness and work-life balance. Our research focuses on coastal and marginal seas, in particular the Baltic Sea. The staff of the five departments Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography, Marine Geology and Marine Observations work on an interdisciplinary basis in a joint research program.
What will be your tasks?
In close cooperation with the scientific working groups, your most important tasks include the technical support for instrument deployments during oceanographic field measurements and ship expeditions, the technical and logistical preparation of such measurements as well as the processing, conversion and validation of oceanographic measurement data. You will also support the technical development of oceanographic instrumentation and measurement platforms and the development of oceanographic software for measurement data processing and expedition management. A small part of your range of tasks will also include importing measurement data into database systems and supporting the maintenance of archiving and database systems.

Good knowledge of the English language and a German class B driver's license are required, a class C1 driver's license and a boating license (SBF See) would be desirable. As some of the work will be carried out on oceanographic research vessels, we expect you to be willing and able to participate in multi-week international research expeditions. Experience in the areas of measurement data processing and databases as well as CAD skills are advantageous.
What does the IOW offer?
IOW offers you a varied workplace in the immediate vicinity of the Baltic Sea with flexible working arrangements, including, for example, the possibility of working from home or remotely. A very good infrastructure with modern laboratory and office equipment, including our own research vessel, form the background for ideal working conditions.
How do we promote equal opportunities ?
Our job offers are aimed at every person regardless of their gender. Research benefits from a diverse working environment, which is why we have signed the Diversity Charter.
IOW aims to specifically promote women in areas where they are underrepresented. For this purpose, the institute has given itself a plan to promote equality (plan for the equal opportunities committee at the IOW ) and has repeatedly been awarded the Total E-Quality award for its commitment (website TOTAL E-QUALITY e.
