Offer Description

The “Mesoscopic Modeling and Theoretical Chemistry” team at the Institut de Chimie Séparatives de Marcoule (ICSM) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to study the molecular modeling of liquid/liquid extraction in the context of the recycling of metals present in electronic waste applications.
In collaboration with experimentalists at ICSM and LITEN, the aim is to study the complex solvent phases involved in liquid/liquid extraction, a separation process that enables metals to be recycled. The systems studied will be complex media (Deep Eutectic Solvents DES, Ionic Liquids) which solubilize metal ions in specific ways.

The first step will be to model these complex fluids at the atomic level using classical molecular dynamics. The work will therefore involve defining a model, then carrying out all-atom simulations to understand and predict the relevant properties linked to the structure of these media and their extracting properties. In particular, it will be necessary to compare and interpret experimental support: X-ray and neutron scattering, thermodynamics of extraction (Gibbs energies), surface tension. The association to water and viscosity, which limit processes, will also be analyzed. The cooperative phenomena that control the process will also be analyzed.

This work will be carried out in the ICSM's LMCT team, which will help develop the modeling methodologies required for the project's success. The ICSM is a joint research unit (UMR 5257) between the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CEA), the University of Montpellier (UM) and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier (ENSCM). The Institute aims to develop high-level fundamental research in separative chemistry, applied to the development of low-carbon energies in a global context of increasing scarcity of natural resources. Applied to the recycling of strategic materials, the ICSM balances its research between “understanding” - i.e. demonstrating the predictive capacity of models built on known principles - and “optimizing” - i.e. demonstrating the feasibility of new chemical systems for selective extraction, sometimes implemented in breakthrough technological processes. It brings together around a hundred scientists.
The position is located in a sector covered by the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with regulations, that your arrival be authorized by the competent MESR authority.
