Offer Description
This position is to be filled within the History of the Mathematical Sciences team at the Institut de mathématiques de Jussieu-Paris rive gauche (IMJ-PRG, UMR 7586, CNRS, Sorbonne université, Université Paris-Cité). The team's research focuses on the history of science in the modern and contemporary periods, in a broad perspective (including the social and cultural history of astronomy). There is a particular interest in digital humanities methods.
The postdoctoral researcher will work in close collaboration with the team's permanent staff and PhD students, as well as with the permanent and contractual members of the team set up as part of project ARCHIFLAMM, in particular with the research engineer from the THALIM laboratory and the PhD student from the CRHEC team at the University of Paris-Créteil.
The ARCHIFLAMM project has two main aims: (1) to prepare a digital scientific edition of the correspondence of the astronomer, spiritualist and writer Camille Flammarion (1842-1925) and of parts of his archives; and (2) to use this previously unpublished corpus to explore the sources of the popularity of a scientist on the fringes of official science, from a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective (history of science, cultural and social history, literary studies, anthropology). ARCHIFLAMM will produce and stimulate new work in four interrelated areas of Flammarion's practice: (a) amateur science and observatory techniques; (b) epistemic and social dimensions of a transnational network; (c) literary techniques in popular scientific writings; (d) spiritualism and research into life after death and extraterrestrial life.
The person recruited should be able to develop original research and produce scientific results related to the ARCHIFLAMM project themes.
He/she will assist the project's scientific manager in coordinating the project, which involves an international and interdisciplinary team of 13 partners and will be involved in the intellectual and material organisation of the study days planned as part of the project and in the publication of the resulting proceedings. He/she will play a major role in indexing the digital archives generated by the project on the EMAN platform and in organising collaborative indexing work with the members of the ARCHIFLAMM project and civil society players, in particular volunteers from the Société astronomique de France. He/she will be responsible for assisting and making proposals for the modelling and feeding of databases linked to the project (bibliography, biographies, etc.). Finally, he/she will be involved in communicating the issues and results of the project to a variety of audiences (writing articles and blog posts, taking part in outreach and popularisation projects, exhibitions, etc.).
This position is to be filled in the History of Mathematical Sciences team of the Institut de mathématiques de Jussieu-Paris rive gauche (IMJ-PRG, UMR 7586, CNRS, Sorbonne université, Université Paris-Cité), in Paris, France, under the supervision of David Aubin and the other members of the ARCHIFLAMM project. A workspace and the necessary computer equipment will be provided.
Travel will be required between the various partners involved in the project, as well as to the Camille Flammarion archives in Juvisy-sur-Orge and other archive centres.
The gross monthly salary is between €2950 and €3500, depending on experience.
The person recruited may, if interested, be given teaching duties, which will also be paid as holiday work.
The original 12-month contract may be renewed at least once.
