Offer Description
JOB ENVIRONMENT:
School of the ministry in charge of industry, IMT Mines Albi is a school of the Institut Mines-Télécom, 1st group of engineering and management schools of France. At the forefront of international industrial and academic issues, it acts as a territorial scientific and economic engine by combining its 4 missions - to train engineers by integrating the dynamics of sustainable development, To conduct scientific research, contribute to economic development and disseminate the culture of science, technology and innovation - in a virtuous and innovative cycle.
Its position in terms of training and research places IMT Mines Albi as a reference school on three of the four themes of the IMT, namely responsible future industry, energy, circular economy and society as well as engineering, health and welfare.
IMT Mines Albi has adopted a strategic plan in 2023 for a five-year period, divided into 7 major actions, thus responding to the strategic orientations of the IMT group to which it belongs.
The RAPSODEE Centre is a training and research centre of IMT Mines Albi. It brings together a hundred people including 34 Research Professors, 1 CNRS Researcher, 1 CNRS Research Engineer, 4 Research and Development Engineers, 2 CNRS Study Engineers, 11 technicians and 3 administrative staff.
As a training, he is an actor in IMT Mines Albi’s general engineering training (student or apprentice status) and carries the options «Renewable energies, sustainable production and construction» and “Pharmaceutical, agri-food and cosmetic processes and processes” and the Energy and Digital Transition course of the “Data Engineering for Information Systems and Energy Systems” option as well as the Building Energy Positive Master’s degree program”
In the field of research, RAPSODEE is a Joint Research Unit associated with the CNRS since 2001 (UMR 5302). The centre is structured into two research groups (Energy and Environment group and Powders and Processes group) and operates two research and innovation platforms (GALA: Advanced Galenic and VALTHERA: THERmic VALoration of processing residues from agro-resources).

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The project is an element of the PEPR "Household Wastes" program. The overall objective of this program, which brings together researchers from different fields (5 engineering laboratories and 5 human sciences laboratories), is to acquire the knowledge needed to improve the recycling and use of household waste across the entire value chain concerned, from its collection to its treatment and recycling and the recovery and/or disposal of the final waste.
The research activities of the project concern the preparation of waste for characterization: what physical and chemical treatments the waste must undergo to increase the robustness of its characterization and its recyclability. Many of these characterizations and analysis require, first, obtaining a material in a powder state that is fine enough to be handled and to operate on limited quantities. This can be done by grinding provided that all the physicochemical properties of the different constituents and their relative proportions are preserved. However, grinding operations are likely to modify other physicochemical properties than just the grain size. These modifications can be linked to different factors such as the way in which mechanical energy is applied, the temperature and humidity conditions or the environment in which grinding is carried out. Among these transformations, we can note modifications of the crystalline state, modifications of the surface state, mechanochemical reactions between solids of different chemical nature, etc. All these potential effects will be the subject of the study with a view to the analysis and recovery of this waste.
In this context, it will be necessary to choose the appropriate grinding technique for the analysis. The choice of a grinding technology can, on an industrial scale, have, beyond the particle size, an important role on the usage properties of the product obtained (flowability, compressibility, electrostatic properties, possibilities of suspension in a liquid, reactivity, dissolution, etc.).
Concerning chemical analyses, the elemental composition of the materials will be determined by different methods, including XRF, ICP-OES and HPLC.
For physicochemical characterizations: the particle size distribution will be done by a laser particle size analyzer and/or an optical microscope. The distribution of the specific surface area and pore size of the materials will be carried out by nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm. The chemical functional surface groups can be determined by FTIR and Raman spectroscopies.
The size and morphology of the particles can influence their handling. A study of the influence of the grinding process on the flowability of these materials will be carried out after grinding and in parallel with the physicochemical analyses. The flowability is measured using a laboratory shear cell for millimeter or sub-millimeter particle sizes, or a dynamic avalanche angle. In particular, the impact of particle morphology and morphology distribution on the flowability of the powder obtained (shear strength, apparent density, evolution of these properties over time) will be studied.

On the expected start date, the candidate must have held a doctorate for less than 3 years, in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, or materials related to waste treatment.
Any academic or professional experience related to the characterization and/or recovery of household waste would be appreciated.
