Offer Description

The doctoral candidate will be hosted and enrolled for PhD at the University Marie Louis Pasteur, Besancon, France, at the CNRS FEMTO-ST research laboratory and will work on developing a demonstration of LA-VCSEL recurrent NN with a deep topology. The project will investigate mutual LA-VCSEL injection-locking and scaling of stability, dimensionality and programmability. Secondments at Aston and Akhetronics will train the DC in using
neuromorphic hardware for optical communication systems (Aston), and in obtaining performance metrics for applications in computational market (Akhetronics).


The project aims at exploiting parallelism in GHz systems and multi-scale input information. The limits of reservoir computing will be overcome through concepts to be tested regarding real-world applications and will be applied to ultra-fast real-time imaging applications. DC5 will implement a deep NN where mutually coupled LAVCSELs act as NN layers.

Expertise in free-space optical experiments, utilizing optical instrumentation such as spectrum analysers and oscilloscopes. Expertise in operating semiconductor lasers. Strong background in coding (python, matlab) will be very helpful.
