The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Helsinki is seeking a university lecturer in mathematics or statistics for a permanent employment contract starting on 1 August 2025.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position of a university lecturer is located in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the work tasks include, in addition to teaching, other tasks related to teaching and its coordination and social interaction. In terms of working time, the position of a university lecturer is divided approximately equally between teaching tasks and other tasks .

Teaching duties include teaching, organizing teaching and assisting in teaching, mainly in the bachelor's degree programs that the department's teachers teach. These programs include, among others, the Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences program, the Bachelor of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry Teacher's Program, and the English-language Bachelor of Science program. In addition to normal contact teaching, the task also includes organizing and developing online courses.

In addition to teaching duties, the position also includes assisting in the implementation of the general teaching activities and social interaction of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. In particular, such tasks include maintaining the department's website, participating in science education, tasks related to the coordination of teaching resources as part of the department's resource group, and acting as a contact person for contacts outside the university. The position also allows for extensive participation in the department's activities through other working groups, such as the department's work well-being group.

The work assignment will be located at the Kumpula Campus of the University of Helsinki. Some of the work assignments can be completed remotely. The work assignments do not involve conducting your own scientific research.

QUALIFICATIONS

A suitable master's degree is required for a university lecturer, and a suitable doctoral degree is considered an advantage. In addition, university lecturers are required to have teaching experience and good teaching skills (see the Faculty of Mathematics and Science's teaching skills assessment process and assessment criteria, https://www.helsinki.fi/fi/matemaattis-luonnontieteellinessa-tiedekunta/tiedekunta/opetustaidon-arviointi-matemaattis-luonnontieteellissensa-tiedekunta  ). We particularly value the ability to provide diverse teaching, pedagogical training, and the ability to produce learning materials.

Successful performance of the position requires excellent oral and written skills in Finnish and fluent English. Good knowledge of Swedish is considered an advantage.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The position is at level 5, and depending on the experience of the candidate, the salary is typically 3,700–4,200 euros/month.
