Tampere University is presently developing modern infrastructures related to multidisciplinary human-centered research. This includes several high-quality research laboratories and research spaces with the latest available equipment enabling research that extends from behavioral and psychophysiological measurements to gaming, esports and use of Extended Reality (XR) in different disciplines, such as management, education, social sciences, and psychology. These infrastructures provide essential support for academic and industry-driven projects by providing access to high-quality state-of-the-art equipment and emerging technology, data and related expertise. The infrastructure is open for use by the scientific community at large. With the launch of Human-Centered Research Hub (HCR Hub), four faculties will work together to open new opportunities for multidisciplinary research involving social sciences, psychology, educational sciences, management, gamification and human-technology interaction.

We are looking for a Staff Scientist to lead the development and daily activities of the university-level infrastructure, Human-Centered Research Hub. The aim is to strengthen the required expertise in developing and keeping up these unique research facilities.

Job description

Staff Scientists are academic personnel who are responsible for specialist activities related to research, providing support to teaching and research staff. The responsibilities of Staff Scientists involve the use and development of research infrastructures and specialist research equipment. Their individual job descriptions are defined in relation to the University’s strategic needs and include teaching, research and the provision of services.

The diverse operations of HCR Hub infrastructure at Tampere University require a devoted Staff Scientist to run day-to-day operations on-site, and to represent the infrastructures while interacting with research communities and university management.

The primary duties of the Staff Scientist to be recruited are: 

  • to maintain and to develop the HCR Hub infrastructures at Tampere University. The use of these infrastructures varies but is primarily related to behavioral and psychophysiological measurements and use of Extended Reality (XR).
  • to organize the day-to-day operations at the infrastructures
  • to assist research communities in utilizing the infrastructure facilities  
  • to follow the trends in emerging technologies and research in order to plan the infrastructure development and keeping it up-to-date
  • to develop a multidisciplinary research environment (hub) and assist researchers in using different behavioral and psychophysiological measurement equipment as such and in combination with various interactive technologies  
  • to participate in research projects and project funding acquisition related to the HCR Hub infrastructure and disciplines represented in HCR Hub.
  • to maintain the relationship with other relevant infrastructure facilities not only in Tampere university but also in other research centers in Finland and in Europe, including representing HCR Hub as Tampere University node in the national MAGICS infrastructure.

Requirements

This position requires the following experience and expertise: 

  • an applicable doctoral degree. We welcome diverse academic backgrounds, including but not limited to Computing, IT, Electronics, Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, and other social sciences.
  • documented motivation and deep interest towards the area documented in job description.
  • wide knowledge and practical skills in one or more emerging interactive technologies (e.g. gamified systems, motion capture systems, haptic systems, AR/VR headsets)
  • wide knowledge and practical experiences on one or more technologies to measure human behavior extending from behavioral measurements to psychophysiological measurements. Examples of measurements are questionnaires, reaction times, eye-tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), electrodermal activity (EDA), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)
  • understanding and experience on physiological/neurophysiological signal processing
  • motivation and ability to put your hands on in tuning research facilities and equipment (I.e. from wires to software) for various needs in the research labs.
  • good social interaction skills 
  • good scientific, presentation and communication skills in English
  • experience in managing research projects and establishing research infrastructure facilities 

In addition, Finnish language skills will also be taken into account as an advantage.

The position will be filled on a permanent basis. The appointment is expected to commence as soon as possible, as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job demand and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. The minimum starting salary will range between 4400 - 4700 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.
