We are now inviting applications for a Research and Development Director to strengthen our university's research and development activities and to work for the benefit of our multidisciplinary research community in the field of networked international research. This is a permanent position with a starting date in February 2025 or as agreed.

Your role

As a Research and Development Director, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing the university's research and development activities in collaboration with the vice-rector of research and the heads of units. You will proactively promote research initiatives together with units, platforms, and management, as well as with the surrounding international community and ecosystem. You will enhance the university's visibility in the research and development field and advance research capabilities, particularly in terms of laboratories, data resources, and collaboration networks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning and Development: Promote the university's research and development initiatives and projects.
  • Project Management: Lead and coordinate the preparation of research projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource management.
  • Innovation Promotion: Develop and support innovative research initiatives and projects. Consider the potential utilization of intellectual property rights.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with units, research institutes, and external stakeholders.
  • Funding Acquisition: Seek and apply for research funding and participate in funding agreement negotiations.
  • Public Visibility: Promote the visibility and utilization of research results and create conditions for the broader utilization of research outcomes.
  • Research Environment Development: Responsible for developing and roadmapping research environments, particularly laboratories, computational environments, data resources, and co-creation inititives.
  • Ecosystem and Networking Promotion: Develop and maintain collaboration networks with research institutes, companies, and other universities internationally.

In this role, you will work closely with the vice-rector of research, research services, partnerships, platforms, and units. You will keep yourself updated on the latest trends and developments in the field and their opportunities in the university environment.

You will report to the vice-rector of research of the University of Vaasa.

Requirements

  • Over 10 years of experience in research and development activities or similar roles.
  • Relevant Master’s degree, a doctoral degree is considered an advantage.
  • Experience in working at a strategic level and planning and implementing strategy-driven operational activities.
  • Ability to understand the organization's needs from a strategic perspective and a strong vision of the development trends and innovations in your field.
  • Experience in leadership and supervisory roles.
  • Ability to manage large entities.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Ability to acquire and manage research funding and make procurements.
  • Development-oriented and customer-focused work approach, curiosity, and openness to new ideas.
  • Excellent collaboration and networking skills, ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills (Finnish, English).

Knowledge of the research sector is considered an advantage. Previous experience in the fields of technology, energy technology, or business studies is also considered an advantage.
