We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a fixed-term two-year position starting on June 1, 2025 (or as agreed) at the Ruralia Institute’s Mikkeli unit.
Job description
We are looking for an expert in quantitative methods and data analytics. The position involves designing and conducting research utilizing regional big data. The primary task is to develop the field of regional data analytics and study the local aspects of changing work and leisure in South Savo region, particularly using electricity consumption data.
The appointee will also have the opportunity to shape the focus of their research. The work will be carried out as part of the Human in Digital and Sustainable Economies research group at the Ruralia Institute and in collaboration with researchers from the Digital Geography Lab (DGL) at the University of Helsinki.
Selection criteria
We are looking for a candidate with expertise in quantitative big data analysis and a strong interest in developing regional data analytics methods. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in geography, geoinformatics, computer science, data science, or a related field. Advanced PhD candidates are also encouraged to apply, however the appointee must have a doctoral degree granted before the beginning of employment.
The following skills will support success in this role:
- Experience in handling and analysing digital big data (e.g., electricity consumption data from buildings, mobile network data)
- Database management skills (e.g., PostgreSQL)
- Statistical expertise related to big data processing and high-performance computing (Python, R)
- GIS software proficiency (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) is an advantage
What we offer
The salary is based on the Finnish university salary system for teaching and research staff, at requirement level 5, with an additional performance-based component. The gross monthly salary for a postdoctoral researcher is approximately €3,500–€4,100, depending on qualifications and career stage. The position includes a six-month trial period.
The primary workplace is the Ruralia Institute in Mikkeli, with the possibility of hybrid work (within Finland).
