Offer Description

The purpose of the Research Fellow's position is to conduct ethnographic fieldwork in Tallinn as part of the international research project POLINERA, which analyzes the political integration of people with a migration background in the era of radicalization in the Nordic and Baltic countries.

The aim of the Political Science and Governance study area at Tallinn University (TLU) School of Governance, Law and Society (SOGOLAS) is to carry out teaching, research, and development activities in various fields of political science.

Work assignments

The Researcher's tasks are primarily related to the work package aimed at analyzing the factors influencing political participation, alienation, and attitudes in areas with a migration background in Estonia, Denmark, and Sweden. The Researcher's task is to carry out fieldwork (observation, interviews) in the Lasnamäe district of Tallinn, as well as preparatory work (literature, (social) media analysis) and later analyze the collected data both on a case-by-case basis and comparatively in cooperation with project partners.

Job responsibilities:

  • Preparing fieldwork (literature analysis, media analysis, social media analysis, establishing contacts);
  • Conducting interviews and observations, transcribing, anonymizing, archiving;
  • Analyzing collected data, presenting results at conferences;
  • Publishing results as scientific articles;
  • Participating in project meetings and collaborating with the project participants in Estonia, Denmark and Norway;
  • Submitting reports on publications and research as required;
  • Actively maintaining and updating your profile in ETIS and other work-related information environments.

Skills/Qualifications

The candidate must meet the requirements for the II career stage of a Researcher as stipulated in Appendix 5 of the TLU Employment Relations Rules .

 

Education

PhD in social or humanities, such as anthropology, sociology, political science, or related fields.

 

Work experience

  • Thorough experience with qualitative research methods (including conducting observations, interviews, analysis, and research ethics).
  • Experience in publishing scientific articles.
  • Good collaboration skills and experience, including studying the direct experiences of vulnerable groups and/or people, combining different research methods, interdisciplinary and cross-country collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently, systematically, and purposefully.

Other beneficial qualifications:

  • Previous experience with ethnic relations, migration, or integration studies.
  • Familiarity with the fieldwork environment (Lasnamäe), having initial points of contact in the field.
  • Knowledge of Estonian.
  • Previous experience participating in international projects.

 

Language skills

English at C1 level, Russian at B2 level, knowledge of Estonian is an advantage.
