Job Description:

The Visual Arts Program, Department of the Arts, at the American University in Cairo is seeking applications for an Associate Professor of Practice in Studio Practices (Visual Art). Preferred candidates will have an interdisciplinary art practice across a range of media, with experience in innovative creative activity and an active engagement with contemporary issues in art. An interest and/or experience in the region is encouraged. The selected applicant will begin in the Fall of 2025. 

The candidate is expected to teach 6 courses per year (3 per semester) including advanced multi-disciplinary studio sequence courses and foundation courses such as Art Foundation and Introduction to Time-Based Media. The position also carries service responsibilities at the department, school, and university levels. Candidates with experience in and familiarity with the North American higher educational system are preferred.  The initial appointment of four years is renewable after successful review.  The successful candidate will be expected to pursue and maintain an active agenda of creative work and/or scholarship, a program of excellence in teaching, and service to the department and the university.


Requirements:

Applicants should have: an MFA, terminal degree, or equivalent in Studio Practice in Visual Art; a minimum 5 years of university-level teaching experience and professional experience in a multi-disciplinary arts, liberal arts educational system; and extensive experience with research-based contemporary art and new media studio practices. 

The successful candidate will teach all levels (introductory, intermediate, and advanced) and should, therefore, have a command of art history, theory, and practice. Experience with cross-disciplinary practice, research, and collaboration is essential. 

Evidence of extensive and successful scholarship and professional practice, including experience in various media, exhibitions, and production environments, is required. Applicants with knowledge and experience in Egyptian and Middle Eastern contemporary art practices and some experience in academic administrative work are especially encouraged.
