Would you like to help create a great academic environment for new (international) students and support their transition into their new studies at the Department of Mathematics? Are you good at planning, coordinating, and engaging in dialogue with people you don't know? Then you might be the person we are looking for.
A new international bachelor’s program will see its beginning in August 2025 at the Department of Mathematics. The academic content of the program will be identical to that of the already existing bachelor's program in Data Science, but all teaching will be conducted in English, and the recruitment will target international students. For the 2025 academic year, there are 20 spots available in the new program.
The job as mentor involves participating in the planning and execution of the introductory days 20 - 22 August 2025, after which you will continue to serve as a mentor for the new students in the international Data Science Program throughout their first year.
You will be part of a team of three mentors associated with the international bachelor’s program in Data Science, and a team of 10-12 mentors across the department’s four bachelor’s programs.
Your tasks will include, but are not limited to:
- Develop the program for the introductory days (study start) in collaboration with responsible staff at the Department of Mathematics
- Coordinate and facilitate the introductory days for the new international bachelor students
- Divide students into study groups and continuously evaluate them
- Hold weekly workshops and the one-hour session "hour of the class", particularly in the autumn semester of 2025 and partly in the spring semester of 2026. The purpose of the workshops is to communicate study techniques and academic requirements
- Plan and organize a social weekend event shortly after the start of studies
- Inform new students about guidance services at AU and be continuously available to offer both academic and social support
- Participate in information and working meetings with other staff and students from the department (mentors, education committees, instructors, possibly tutors).
- Evaluate the study start and mentor program, contribute to the establishment of the international mentor group for the study start in 2026, and pass on experiences to them.
We offer
- A mentoring course to prepare you for the mentor role and group facilitation.
- The opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the academic start and environment for new international students.
- A job where you will gain experience in communication, project management, navigating a complex organization, facilitating group conversations, and workshops.
We expect
- That you are a student at the Department of Mathematics.
- That you are good at listening and talking to others.
- That you are good at planning and coordinating.
- That you can meet deadlines.
Working hours
The working hours are on average 4 hours per week, but this will vary significantly throughout the year. Especially during the start of the semester in August-September, there will be more hours, while fewer hours can be expected in December-January and June-July.
The workplace is the Department of Mathematics, Ny Munkegade 118, 8000 Aarhus C.
For questions, please contact the mentor coordinator, Louise Kobek Thorsen lkt@math.au.dk .
