The Master of Management & Professional Accounting Program offered by UTM has the following Sessional Lecturer position available for the Summer term and invites applications from suitably qualified candidates who are not current University of Toronto students. Course title: Financial Distress, Insolvency & Restructuring, MGT 2261H (2 modules)
Class schedule: 2-hour classes 1-2 times per week, Monday to Friday starting at 9 am, 12 pm, or 3 pm (day/time subject to change)
Dates of appointment: July to August 2025
Description of course: This course aims to study the reasons why some firms find themselves in financial distress, alternative courses of action (including out-of-court and legal options) in response to financial distress, and the role of various stakeholders in the process.
Traditional business courses often deal with financially healthy firms. However, failure is an inevitable reality for many businesses.
The course intends to:
• Help students understand how to diagnose corporate financial distress and analyze internal and external warning signals;
• Help students understand the contractual tools used by creditors to monitor borrower performance, their accounting and reporting for problem loans, and likely actions upon violation of covenants;
• Help students understand the salient reporting issues that often precede an insolvency filing, such as impairments and going concern opinions;
• Help students understand the options available to companies in financial distress, including out-of-court restructuring;
• Familiarize students with legal process for reorganizations and liquidations, and understand the accounting, governance, and financial decision-making issues that arise during and after emergence from insolvency;
• Expose students to the potentially lucrative area of investing in distressed assets.
Position description: All normal duties related to the design, administration and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; supervision of teaching assistants; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and examinations; calculation and submission of grades to university officials; holding regular student office hours and maintaining reasonable availability for student contact.
Minimum qualifications: Preferred qualifications are either PhD in relevant discipline (completed) or for non-University of Toronto graduate students, in progress, or relevant qualifications, professional designation or professional experience. We are seeking previous experience in teaching, teaching excellence, and mastery of subject area. Previous experience in teaching a similar course is highly desirable. preference in hiring is given to qualified persons holding the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III.
Salary (per module): $9,037.16
Anticipated enrolment: 73
Minimum TA support: 120 hours
