The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology at Mount Royal University invites applications for a 2-year limited term position that will commence August 15, 2025, at the Rank of Assistant Professor.

Mount Royal’s Faculty of Science and Technology offers Bachelor’s Degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Data Science, Environmental Science, Geology, and General Science, which allow students to prepare for a variety of exciting careers in science and technology by not only teaching them the basics of science but also how to be flexible and innovative problem-solvers.

Faculty members in the Faculty of Science and Technology also support the delivery of the liberal education component of all Mount Royal University undergraduate degree programs by teaching courses in General Education (GNED), Cluster-One: Numeracy and Scientific Literacy. In foundation level GNED courses students explore pre-disciplinary themes and subjects and are exposed to a range of academic disciplines while developing key undergraduate intellectual capacities.

The Department Earth and Environmental Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science – Major in Geology, Bachelor of Science – Major in Environmental Science, as well as minors in Geology and Geography and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Spatial Data Science

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences invites applications for a 2-year limited term position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, to support the Spatial Data Science Certificate program.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching and ongoing scholarly activity. The focus for the position will be on teaching existing courses in the Spatial Data Science program as well as developing new courses in support of that program. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent, scholarship informed, teaching at the post-secondary level. The ability to offer undergraduate students independent research experiences, while not necessary, is considered an asset. Priority will be given to applicants who specialize in one or more of the following areas:

  • Web GIS

  • Spatial Statistics

  • Geospatial AI

  • Modelling and visualization

  • Remote sensing


Responsibilities

●    Instruction: course delivery including preparation of course outlines, other course materials, course activities, lesson preparation and assessments, and course learning management systems; and
●    Administration: administer final exams, input final grades upon course completion, and participate in course-related meetings, as required; and
●    Service: may include: coaching student competition teams, mentoring student clubs, assisting with the development of curriculum, and serving on departmental or university committees.


Qualifications

The successful candidate for this position will hold a PhD in Geography,  or a closely related field, with a strong theoretical foundation in spatial data science and geographic information systems. In cases where the doctorate is in a “related field”, it is the candidate’s responsibility to demonstrate sufficient expertise. Academic experience and relevant industry experience will be considered significant assets for the position.

New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/ scholarship/ service pattern (TSS) focuses on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching/ service pattern (TS) focuses on teaching and service only. The successful candidate for this role will be hired into the teaching/service pattern (TS).
