Position Description
The Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) has opened applications for the position of project scientist at the Center for Projects and Innovation – Centro Pi. Created in 2021, Centro Pi is a hub of dynamic collaboration where research is carried out using high technologies in Applied Mathematics. Here, academia and the public and private sectors come together to solve complex challenges through the alliance of expertise in mathematics and artificial intelligence. Its approach focuses on developing projects that apply advanced techniques in Applied Mathematics, such as machine learning and deep learning, to produce innovative solutions.

Its overarching goals include accelerating knowledge transfer to the public and private sectors; producing technical and scientific advances inspired by interactions with our external partners; and providing educational opportunities for our students.

The career is a permanent, non-tenure-track position, which plays a pivotal role in the activities of Centro Pi. The main roles of project scientists are:

a) attract, coordinate and carry out technological projects in the field of mathematical sciences;

b) produce technical-scientific knowledge materialized in research articles and technical reports;

c) teach courses and supervise technological internships, master's dissertations and doctoral theses;

d) disseminate knowledge through books, videos, lectures and events;

e) contribute to academic and institutional management by participating in IMPA’s committees and councils.

The position’s yearly base salary ranges from BRL 154,011.36 to BRL 210,927.00 (before taxes), to be supplemented with funds from projects carried out at Centro Pi, up to a maximum yearly total ranging from BRL 462,034.08 to BRL 556,394.28 (before taxes).

Qualifications

Candidates for the position must be highly qualified professionals with a doctoral degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, having a proven ability to attract and coordinate projects in technological partnership with companies and other entities, generate and improve knowledge in the area of applications of mathematical sciences, and also contribute to its dissemination.

The following qualifications are strongly desired:

• A track record of high-quality research, commensurate with the years of professional experience;

• Ability to lead and manage complex projects – previous experience with industrial or large open-source projects is a plus;

• Knowledge of and experience in collaborative computer programming – experience with numerical and statistical software;

• Interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the willingness to work with multiple researchers, students and industry professionals.
